Four-cylinder compound Pacific producing 2200hp, built for the Etat (State) Railway in 1922. Express train locomotive used chiefly on Paris-Le Havre and Paris-Le Mans-Rennes trains until displaced by electrics and diesels in the 1960's. Operated by the Pacific Vapeur Club, a volunteer group founded in 1983 and based in Sotteville. In addition to the 231G558, they have their own trainset which can carry approximately 450 passengers. They regularly operate excursions on the former Ouest (Etat) and Nord lines of the SNCF.
