As you look at the engine, the bottom-contact, under-hanging style third rail is to the left. It has a safety covering on top. Looks like right in the bottom center of the photo, part of the cover is missing on the adjacent track's third rail. On the top rear of the loco near the rear bell, is a small pantograph used on junction trackage where overhead rails we mounted to keep the loco from becoming stranded in normal third rail gaps around switches. Here's an article by Emily Moser: http://www.iridetheharlemline.com/2015/02/13/the-electrification-of-grand-central-and-metro-norths-third-rail/

There is an under-running third rail on the righthand side of the locomotive.

The third rail is to the right of the locomotive. New York Central rolling stock used a "shoe" that drew current from the bottom of the rail, whereas on the Long Island Rail Road the "shoe" drew it from the top.

There is third rail; look down between tracks to our left of locomotive - between the tracks there is covered underrunning third rail both the track this train is on and for track adjacent to platform. Then on vacant tracks to our right of locomotive the third rail is on our left of both tracks. On the more central track you can see where every 6th tie, more or less, is extended to support the bracket. And there right at bottom edge of image central track's underrunning third rail is missing part of the cover, thereby exposing the rail. Here, viewing angle on this posted last month by photographer makes the third rail more visible http://www.railpictures.net/photo/655770/

I believe that that's the 3rd rail that runs on the far side of the train.
