By the condition of the track and right of way, I take it the term "maintained" is used loosely here...

The 1972 operating time table listed much of the Twin Cities mainline at 60 mph. However through Eau Claire the trains ran closer to 25 mph and more like 10-15 mph around a tight curve just west of the depot. Most of the rail was WWII vintage, and no question, CNW was deferring track maintenance where it could, including through the city of Eau Claire at the time. Track speeds got down to about 25 mph on this line before CNW and now UP began substantial improvements. It appears UP can now handle trains at 50 mph or so on this line, and heavier welded rail is now in place, much better ballast, but still using wood ties.
