Heisler looking like it is doing Northeast Corridor speeds, I am amused. But it does emphasize the locomotive's details nicely with the background essentially having no detail.

Thanks 'Wood! I agree. It's like a builder's photo - in motion! I also like the motion captured in the crankshaft and driveshaft below the locomotive.

The master of the pan rides again. Heislers, Shays and Climaxes. were confusing to me for a long time. When I was 15 I picked up a book about Pacific Northwest Logging and that set me straight. Next feat was learning about steam locomotive valve gearing.

What a very nice 'Mitch' pan shot! You have discovered a method that makes it look like this Heisler class locomotive is moving very fast. I like the look of the smoke leaving the stack - you can see the hot gas as well as the wave of escaping steam.

But how do we tell if its 'rods down'? Another classic. And at the blazing speed of 10 mph?
