Sure would be nice if today's freeways were as empty at these are. I have liked F units for many a year. However, as a retired engineer I can attest to the danger associated with entering / exiting the old covered wagons. I am sure that and technology sealed their fate. Steam gave way to "phase one" diesels, (F units / GP & SD 7/9's) which in time gave way to phase 2 diesels, (SD 40-2's / C30-7's). And now we have the heartless / soulless and look alike motive power of the present. I retired in 2010 and 40-2's were the king of the high steel in my day. We still got an SD 9 or two on the main once in a while as well. With "DP" power of today a lot less skill is needed as an engineer to move the freight. In my opinion, much of the magic of railroading is long gone.

This MUST be a Sunday morning for there to be so little traffic on the Mass Pike. A friend of mine on the top floor of one of the "three deckers" ( building on the far right) along this stretch, GREAT place to watch trains from.
