This is the view I had out the back of a train on my way to Great Lakes for Navy boot camp.....confusing!

If you blur you eyes, it looks like a wrought iron gate laying on the ground.

There's enough traffic on these tracks that snow isn't a major problem since trains are moving for most of the day. There are many pictures that show the switches on fire, which keeps them from freezing up. It also keeps the snow from piling up there.

Must be fun when the interlocking controlling all the switches fails.
