This photo is a good indication of how railroads and the right of way came first and the towns / roads came after. No municipality in it's right mind would let a railroad build like this and interrupt the flow of traffic / commerce as well as be in such close proximity to traffic if the railroad had not been there first.

This has always been one of my favorite photographs of yours. The first issue of Trains I ever bought with my own money included your photo essay of the Upper Mississippi, which featured this shot. Little did I know, I'd eventually attend graduate school just up the river in Dubuque and visit many of the same locations, including this one.
