Good example of why railroads went to roller bearings!

@Mark, the same thing will happen to roller bearings if they lose lubrication.

As a 40 year railroader who has worked with plain (friction) bearings and roller bearings I can tell you I've never had a hot bearing with rollers, but they were quite common with the older type shown here.
