Sad as it may be to see those old F units cut up, the fact is they're of very limited use to small freight lines. The whole carbody design, while it made sense at the time it was being built, makes it very difficult; if not impossible, to run a single locomotive without turning it at the end of the run. Sure, a company could do like Santa Fe and convert them... but that takes time and a lot of money that most small railroads really don't have. Donating doesn't do the cash strapped small railroads any good, since they don't get paid for that; and selling it isn't likely to happen, as very few railroads want to bother with them. So, in the end, the only real option, when the engines are about worn out, is to cut them up and get a little bit of money back off the sale of the scrap metal.

That poor f unit. They could have at least tried to auction some of the equipment off.

Alex, like I said, there aren't many companies that will want to bother with an F unit. The end single cab and carbody make them severely limited in what they can be used as.

A bizarre scene for 2008; interesting composition and catch indeed. Sad, but thank you for posting this!
