Fuel tank looks like they may have initially tried to combine the NW and SOU liveries by physically merging two locomotives.

The Tidewater Chapter of the NRHS ran a trip from Norfolk to Lynchburg in the fall of 1983. When the 611 arrived in Norfolk two day prior to the trip the crown sheet began to leak. This unit and its sister unit were in Roanoke so NS ran them down on the next coal train to Norfolk to pull our trip from Norfolk to Lynchburg and return. This trip may well have been the only fan trips run with these units. We did see a couple of Officer specials run in and out of Norfolk. The NS did reroute our trip through Farmville on the return which allowed us to travel over the High Bridge just out side of Farmville. The 611 was not allowed to cross the High Bridge. Today the rails are gone and the bridge and right of way are are part of a rail trail for hikers and walkers.
