Your night photography game is doing great. Question, why are two cars/locomotives back in the train illuminating the ground next to them?

It could be the ditch lights from the second and third motive power.

J.Randall, I believe they switch the ditch lights off on trailers, to save power for the engine. And I believe there is no purpose in having those on.

The lights you see next to the other two motors that are illuminating the ground are the "Step Lights" for the ladders/steps onto the locomotive walkways. these are there to illuminate the steps so crew members don't trip, fall, lose their footing or miss the steps to climb onto the locomotive at night in the dark. If you watch any train video or are trackside at night, watch the locomotives as they pass by, you will see these step lights illuminating the ground and the area around the steps.
