The first car behind the locomotive is a steam generator car. Santa Fe F3A and F7A units had a large water tank at the rear of the engine room, and had steam generator controls on the left side of the cab, but the steam generators were in the F3 and F7 booster units. It's uncommon to see a single rednose F3 or F7 cab unit on a passenger train. When it occurred, there was always a steam generator car to provide steam for Santa Fe's steam ejector air conditioning on the passenger cars.
