Unusual visitors to Los Angeles Union Station on May 13, 1981 ... Southern Pacific 4-8-4 4449 simmers on the track adjacent to SD40E 7364 and its display of new freight car technology - a 3-unit car designed to hold six shipping containers, stacked one atop the other (most likely SP 513301), and the Glasshopper fiberglass covered hopper built by ACF in conjunction with Cargill and the SP (RNDX 163). The technology of the Glasshopper was not duplicated, but the idea of stacking containers proved to be wildly successful! The 4449 was the power for the train that brought the Glasshopper into Los Angeles.
