As BNSF Railway's Z-MEMLAC7-30 (Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal; Memphis TN to Los Angeles CA) rounds the curve at Fullerton Junction, the conductor steps out of the front door to get a good look at a relic from another time - Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751. Leading the Z-MEMLAC7-30 is one of BNSF's newest locomotives - ES44C4 8333, not even a month old. In contrast, the steam engine was built by Baldwin in May 1927. Eighty-eight years separate these two locomotives, showcasing how the technology has changed - and also how much hasn't! The operate on the same tracks, the 3751 could pull at least part of that intermodal train (it has on break-in runs in the past), signals still control train movements and dedicated railroaders are still at the throttle.
