Bringing up the rear of a Southern Pacific freight as it crosses Donner Pass on March 18th, 1978, is Union Pacific CA-8 class caboose 25591. Norden, located at the summit of Donner Pass at nearly 7000' of elevation, normally has much more snow that this in March, but the winter of '77/'78 experienced what was possibly California's most severe drought of the Twentieth Century. (Norden has had an average annual snowfall of 189.7 inches over the last 30 years.)
