The Juniata Shops is an original Pennsylvania Railroad Facility. The original Altoona shops were built in 1850 with the first locomotive repairs occurring in December of 1852. The Juniata Shops were completed in 1890 after the original Altoona shops became too crowded. Today Juniata is a modern locomotive repair facility that specializes in everything from preventative maintenance to complete rebuilds. Juniata is the most modern locomotive heavy repair facility in the railroad industry and is the only shop to receive contracts from both EMD and GE to build new locomotives. After the 1999 takeover of Conrail, Norfolk Southern has favored Juniata as their main repair facility. Over 1,000 men and women are employed at these shops making it one of their largest locations on the entire NS system.
