A fan trip operated by the Union Pacific for the Union Pacific Historical Society (which was having a convention in Ontario CA) finds the railroad’s “Challenger” locomotive, 4-6-6-4 3985, teamed with their A-B-A set of E9 diesels to pull a passenger train over southern California’s Cajon Pass on May 22, 1994. The train is seen here at Blue Cut, climbing the 2.2% grade to Cajon Pass’ Summit, eleven miles further. The train operated from Ontario to Barstow and back, primarily on Santa Fe’s First District (on which the UP has had trackage rights since 1905).
