A quartet of SD45s – 2 from Union Pacific (3646 and another 3628) and 2 from Rio Grande (5327 and 5338) – grind up Cajon Pass with an empty coal train, headed back to Utah. Rio Grande SD45s were a common sight in southern California in the 1970s, as they were commonly mixed with UP power on the coal trains headed for the Kaiser Steel mill in Fontana CA.
