The Dash 8 Phase III Amtrak 50th Anniversary locomotive #160, one of six specially painted units to commemorate the historic milestone, displays the patriotic Amtrak Deep Red and Blue derived from the American Flag that first debuted on 20 Dash 8-32BWH locomotives in the early 90s. This is the only locomotive to wear this livery since, and the first time it's been adapted to another type.
Since no Dash 8's were due for paint before retirement and because they rarely lead passenger trains anymore, I got the idea to put it on a P42 after being inspired by some fantasy adaptations HO modelers had done. The original designer, Blair Slaughter, and the rest of our team liked the idea. The talented crew at Beech Grove executed the design flawlessly with hand-masked pinstripes carrying through vents, recesses and steps (something that's becoming a lost art elsewhere in the industry).
