Amtrak Pacific Surfliner 765 (San Diego to Goleta), with CDTX SC-44 "Charger" 2110 pushing the six-car train, is about to make the left turn at Mission Tower and head into stub-end Los Angeles Union Station. Just before the curve, it passes a deadline of at least nine stored Metrolink F59PH and F59PHI diesels. Just beyond Mission Tower is a Metrolink San Bernardino Line train heading east to (where else?) downtown San Bernardino, crossing the Los Angeles River as it passes the tower. This area has a real maze of trackage, as Santa Fe, Southern Pacific and Union Pacific all converged here, from the north, south and east, to enter Union Station. Mission Tower and, in Union Station, Terminal Tower used to control all these train movements, but today Metrolink handles this congestion from a dispatching center in Pomona, some thirty miles to the east.
