Amtrak train 3, the westbound Southwest Chief, is seen at Los Angeles Union Station four minutes after it arrived on Track 13 … and twenty minutes before it was due to arrive at 8:00 am! (Thank you, schedule padding! I mean, really … one hour and six minutes to travel 30 miles?). Leading the train this day is AMTK P42DC 161, painted in the carrier’s first paint scheme in honor of Amtrak’s 50th Anniversary in 2021. (This engine replaces the other Phase I painted unit, 156, which was wrecked in 2019 or 2020.) AMTK 161 is teamed with P42DC 4 to pull the six-car train (for those keeping score at home, those cars are sleepers 32040 and 32018, diner 38040, lounge 33035 and coaches 34016 and 31011). (Los Angeles, California – January 5, 2022)
