Amtrak train 3, the westbound Southwest Chief, crosses from Track 2 to Track 3 as it rolls west through Fullerton Junction to make its stop, some 4 hours 23 minutes late, at the Fullerton Transportation Center (21st Century-speak for a train station). Lead engine 184, one of the P42DCs painted to commemorate the carrier’s 40th Anniversary (in 2011), is teamed with P42DC 29 to pull this six-car train from Chicago to Los Angeles. Amtrak 184 wears what is known as the Phase IV scheme, and the decade-plus paint appears to be getting a little worn, as might be expected of a locomotive used in near-daily service.
