The Modern Day A-B-A. BNSF GP39E 2740 (née-Great Northern 3007, GP30, 4/1963) was a vintage rarity to see on a road freight, so often they are led by a seemingly unending parade of GEVOs. Together with “B” unit BNSF 338 (née-ATSF 338, GP60B, 7/1991) and BNSF 1680 (née-Burlington Northern 6347, SD40-2, 3/1973) they made quite a sight as they approached the Baltimore through truss bridge over the Illinois and Michigan Canal next to the Des Plaines River in Joliet, Illinois, on Monday, August 30, 2022. BNSF is also one of the few railroads where cabless “B” units can be seen operating in the modern era.
