As Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District train 14 heads from South Shore, Indiana, to Chicago, Illinois, the six-car train, comprised of Nippon Sharyo EMU cars, approaches the railroad's 11th Street station in Michigan City. The station, visible just to he left of the train, is a minimal shelter, not much bigger (or more insulated) than a bus stop shelter – which, on a cold January morning, with light snow falling and the temperature at -1º F (-17.2º C) – and a wind-chill factor of -18º F (-27.78º C) – makes waiting for a train pretty brutal (at least by this native southern Californian's standards)! Oddly enough, while still hovering around 0º F, there was no snow at all in Porter, roughly 12 miles to the southwest and about as close to Lake Michigan as this location is. The CSS&SB line through town featured street running down 10th and 11th Streets, but sadly this line was moved out of the streets six years later, in February 2022 … Progress, apparently.
