Several patched diesels sit in Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway’s Watson Yard, in Los Angeles’ Wilmington neighborhood. BNSF SD40-2 7847 was built in July 1978 (27 years earlier) as Colorado & Southern 7847. In 1981, ten years after the Burlington Northern merger, the C&S (and Fort Worth & Denver) subsidiaries were officially absorbed into the BN Railroad. At that time, CS 7847 became BN 7847, an identity it had until the Burlington Northern Santa Fe merger in September 1995. Unlike most of the former Santa Fe locomotives, many of the BN diesels, such as this one, retained their BN numbers into the BNSF era. (Los Angeles, California – July 25, 2005). Photographed on railroad property with permission.
