Heading east 9 hours 4 minutes behind schedule, Amtrak 6, the California Zephyr heading from Emeryville Ca to Chicago IL, approaches McCook NE on a blistering hot morning. Thirty-one-year-old Dash 8-40BP 817 (classed as a P40DCu by Amtrak) and P42DC 146 are whisking the nine-car train across the prairies, giving passengers a daytime view not normally associated with this part of the trip … although they most likely would rather be on-time rather than gazing at farms. Sadly, this wasn’t the only Zephyr running this late, or later, for the past week. (July 13, 2024)
