Sitting at Amtrak's 16th Street Diesel Shop is a variety of motive power: On the left is AMTK MP14B 592, and next to that is Illinois Department of Transportation (IDTX) SC-44 "Charger" 4612. Looming in the foreground is the bug-splattered face of AMTK P42DC 17, built by GE in October 1996. These aging P42DCs are due to be replaced on many trains here in Illinois (as well as in California, Oregon and Washington) by the Siemens diesels owned by state agencies. Amtrak is taking delivery of similar Siemens ALC-42 locomotives starting in 2021. And, no, the lighting fixture that appears to be on number 17's cab roof is not part of the engine, but rather one of the tall yard lights. (Chicago, Illinois – September 26, 2017)
