A pair of BNSF Railway locals meet on the Norfolk Southern’s Kansas City District (of the Illinois Division), which connects to the BNSF Brookfield Sub just to the left of here … BNSF GP39E 2931, is one of the first locomotives to carry Burlington Northern Santa Fe markings. No other locomotives wore this exact scheme (BNSF 2911's scheme was similar, but not identical). The 2931 was built by EMD as Union Pacific GP35 746. When UP retired this engine, it was rebuilt by EMD to what Burlington Northern called a GP39E and numbered BN 2931.
Heading east is another local, with SD40-2 1747 (ex-BNSF 6931; née-ATSF 5179) and GP39-2R 2791 (ex-BN GP39E 2771, ex-NS GP30 2599, née-SOU GP30 2599), for power. In another 1000-feet, this train will cross into North Kansas City. It is a shame that today’s BNSF Railway is no longer this colorful! (Kansas City, Missouri – March 3, 2016)
