This is only the fourth Amtrak train 4, the Southwest Chief, to load its initial load of passengers in Fullerton rather than Los Angeles. This was due to a four-day shutdown of the trackage in Los Angeles Union Station for heavy maintenance, resulting in Amtrak trains 3 and 4 terminating and originating in Fullerton, with Los Angeles passengers being bussed for the 30-mile gap. Seven car Amtrak 4 arrived 19 minutes early, completely empty (except for the crew) and spent a while loading two cities' worth of passengers, and the train departed 12 minutes late! Amtrak's Operation Lifesaver locomotive (commemorating the rail safety organization's 50th anniversary), P42DC 203, was teamed with P42DC 44, making a nice show for the assembled railfans at the station. (There are always railfans at this station!) Tomorrow, Saturday the 30th, it is back to normal for both Amtrak and Metrolink. (Fullerton, California – December 29, 2023)
