Portland & Western GP9 1801, which regularly calls Eugene, Oregon, home, was built by EMD in April 1959 as Southern Pacific 5830. In 1965, the SP renumbered it to 3693, and in 1977 the SP's Sacramento Shops rebuilt the engine into GP9E (or GP9R, depending upon the source) 3855. It was late sold to the Willamette & Pacific (as their 1801), and when the WPRR became a subsidiary of the PNWR, the reporting marks were changed. The 1801 is one of the few engines on the PNWR roster that is not painted in the colors of parent Genessee & Wyoming.
